天使の卵 aka Angel's Egg

June 30, 2005

Good news. Konitan is set to star in a film adaptation of "Tenshi No Tamago" (Angel's Egg). Her co-star will be 17 year-old Hayato Ichihara, who you may recognize from "All About Lily Chou-Chou" and "Waterboys 2." I've translated the press release:

On June 29th, it was announced that "Tenshi No Tamago" (天使の卵), Naoki Award winning author Yuka Murayama's (村山由佳) (40) first book, will be adapted into a film starring Hayato Ichihara (市原隼人) (17), and Manami Konishi (小西真奈美) (26) as the heroine. The story depicts the course of a prep-school student's love at first sight with a beautiful psychiatrist eight years his senior.

The novel was originally published in 1994 and won an award for best newcomer. Written with spirited sensitivity, the bestseller was hailed as the "Pure Love Bible," and continues to fascinate women in their 20s and 30s, selling more than 800,000 copies to date. "Tenshi No Hashigo" (天使の梯子), published in 2004, also caused a stir.

Ichihara plays the role of the love struck protagonist who falls for an older woman despite her lack of interest. He starred in 2001's "All About Lily Chou-Chou" (リリィ・シュシュのすべて), in which he stood out as a talented, pure, young actor, and has worked on films and TV series since. "I'm very excited to see how the film will turn out. I intend to put my best foot forward," he said of his new project.

Konishi "want[s] to make a film where, after you watch it, you'll want to go out and meet someone special." Since her debut, she has performed on numerous stages, and won the New Actor Prize for her work in "Amidadou Dayori" (阿弥陀堂だより). The production team said that she "is a pure beauty and a perfect fit for the role."

Dentsuu Casting and Entertainment's Shimizu Keitaro (清水敬太郎), who is responsible for the adaptation, hopes to "preserve the original work with great care and to produce a piece that won't betray the fans' expectations."

Director: Shin Togashi (冨樫森). Opens next year.
